Britain’s most prolific child killer Lucy Letby has reportedly complained about weight gain whilst earning approximately £20 weekly through multiple prison jobs at HMP Bronzefield, according to prison sources who claim the former nurse has been spending her earnings on snacks and confectionery.
The 35-year-old, who is serving 15 whole-life orders for murdering seven babies and attempting to kill seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016, is currently housed at Europe’s largest women’s prison in Surrey. Sources indicate Letby has secured employment in the laundry, kitchen and library departments.
A freedom of information request of Inside Times revealed recently that prisoners earn 50p per hour for work in prison workshops (when the minimum wage is £9.50 per hour). Based on these rates, Letby’s three positions could provide her with approximately £20 weekly, which prison insiders describe as “a lot” within the prison economy.
Enhanced Prisoner Status
Letby, who is serving a whole life order, is now housed in a cell with an ensuite bathroom and TV at HMP Bronzefield, a women-only facility. The privately-run facility, operated by Sodexo Justice Services, accommodates 572 inmates and has previously housed other notorious criminals including serial killer Joanna Dennehy and Rose West.
Prison sources report that Letby has been purchasing “loads and loads of junk food” from the prison canteen, including Quality Street chocolates. The former nurse has allegedly complained about reaching 72 kilograms (approximately 11 stone 5 pounds), which she considers “the fattest she’s ever been” following her previous slender build.
According to insiders, the child killers have also secured prison jobs, with Batool working in the library whilst Letby has begun work as a cleaner. The source clarified that Letby holds positions in multiple departments, maximising her earning potential within the facility.

Controversial Friendship
The disturbing alliance between Letby, 35, who murdered seven babies in her care, and Batool, 30, who was convicted of murdering her ten-year-old stepdaughter, has emerged at Europe’s largest women’s prison in Surrey. The pair reportedly spend considerable time together playing the card game Uno, which has become what one source described as a “grim spectacle” for other inmates and staff.
The difference between them is that Batool does not discuss her crime, while Letby tells anyone who will listen that she’s innocent,” they alleged. Both women are classified as enhanced prisoners, granting them additional privileges including more freedom of movement within the facility.
Prison Conditions and Security
HMP Bronzefield is the only purpose-built private prison solely for women in the UK, and is the largest female prison in Europe. The facility has gained media attention for its regime and the high-profile nature of many inmates.
Letby remains behind bars at HMP Bronzefield, a women’s prison in Surrey, and has had all her applications to appeal her convictions rejected. Despite this, her legal team continues to pursue avenues for appeal.
An application to the CCRC on behalf of Ms Letby was received on the evening of Monday 3 February 2025, as her new defence lawyer Mark McDonald prepares fresh applications challenging her convictions.
Staff Response to High-Profile Inmates
Prison expert Mark Leech previously explained that inmates like Letby are considered “restricted status” prisoners, equivalent to Category A in the male estate. “They are also monitored closely by staff as they are at risk of attack. But their lives will stay quite comfortable as long as they behave,” the source explained.
The source added that staff face challenges managing high-profile prisoners: “People are angry, but staff have to do what they can to keep prisoners happy.” This has led to claims that Letby receives preferential treatment, with one insider suggesting she is treated “like a princess” by officers who allegedly “pander” to her needs.
Prison Work and Wages
In a Report that was published by the Howard League for Penal Reform in 2011, it was documented that the average pay for prison service work is £9.60 per week. Current figures suggest little has changed, with inmates earning approximately 50p per hour for workshop duties.
Although prison wages are low, prisoners do not have to pay for accommodation, their meals, basic toiletries or clothing if required. However, they must purchase phone credit and pay rent for televisions, with all other items bought from the prison canteen.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
She was given a whole life in prison order, on top of the existing multiple whole life orders she had been given for the murder of seven babies and attempted murder of six others over the same period. In July 2024, Letby received an additional whole-life order following a retrial for the attempted murder of another infant, known as Baby K.
The Criminal Cases Review Commission confirmed receipt of Letby’s application in February 2025, whilst the Thirlwall Inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths continues, with a report expected in November 2025.
Cheshire Police have said that further charges could “possibly” be brought against Letby as a result of these further investigations, as detectives continue examining incidents involving approximately 30 other infants.
Letby continues to maintain her innocence whilst serving what will be the remainder of her life at HMP Bronzefield, where The effect of that order is that Letby will never be eligible for release.

Is this the wrong photo??? This guy and his family moved to Russia to escape the “woke” education in their children’s schools. Now he joins the Russian army to fight against Ukraine so that he and his family receive Russian citizenship. They even have a YouTube channel about their move and life in Russia. So what has this got to do with a serial killer?
Yes.This was a glitch.Thank you for reporting it.
