South Yorkshire Police have launched an urgent manhunt after a woman was raped by a stranger in a Sheffield city centre hotel on New Year’s Day, releasing CCTV images of a suspect they believe can assist with their investigation.

The attack occurred around 4am on 1 January in a hotel room at St Mary’s Gate, near Sheffield’s inner ring road. Detectives say the victim did not know her attacker, classifying the incident as a stranger rape – one of the most serious categories of sexual assault.

Police have now released CCTV footage showing a man they urgently need to identify. The suspect is described as approximately 5ft 10ins tall with short black hair, a beard, and a distinctive slit in one of his eyebrows.

Extensive Investigation Underway

We have been conducting extensive enquiries since the incident was first reported to us, but are now appealing for the public’s help to identify the man in this image as we believe he may be able to help us with our investigation,” a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

The force revealed they had exhausted initial lines of enquiry before taking the decision to release the CCTV images publicly, nearly four weeks after the attack. This suggests detectives have already pursued multiple investigative avenues without identifying the suspect.

The location of the assault – St Mary’s Gate – is a busy commercial area of Sheffield city centre, home to several hotels including the Premier Inn Sheffield City Centre. The area sits adjacent to the A61 inner ring road and is close to Sheffield Hallam University and numerous bars and restaurants along Ecclesall Road.

Rising Sexual Offences in Sheffield

The attack comes against a backdrop of concerning crime statistics in Sheffield. According to the latest Office for National Statistics data, sexual offences in the city have risen by 20 per cent year-on-year, with 1,561 incidents recorded in the 12-month period.

Sheffield’s overall crime rate stands at 119.4 crimes per 1,000 people, approximately 14 per cent higher than the national average. The city has been identified as having particular issues with violent crime, which accounts for more than 30 per cent of all reported offences.

Crime analysis experts note that Sheffield city centre experiences higher concentrations of certain crime types, particularly in areas with nighttime economy venues. The St Mary’s Gate area, whilst generally considered safe during daylight hours, forms part of Sheffield’s inner ring road system where several crime hotspots have been identified.

Stranger Attacks Remain Rare

Whilst any sexual assault is serious, stranger rapes represent a particularly concerning category of offence. According to national statistics, the vast majority of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim, making stranger attacks both statistically unusual and particularly alarming for public safety.

Detective Inspector Stuart May of South Yorkshire Police, speaking about similar cases, has previously emphasised: “We take all reports of sexual assault extremely seriously and have specialist officers trained to support victims through what is an incredibly traumatic experience.

The force’s approach to sexual assault investigations has been under scrutiny following historical failings, particularly around the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal. However, South Yorkshire Police have implemented significant reforms in recent years, including enhanced training for officers dealing with sexual offences and improved victim support services.

Public Appeal for Information

Police are urging anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV image to come forward immediately. They stress that even small pieces of information could prove crucial in identifying the suspect and preventing further offences.

Members of the public with information are asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 739 of 1 January. Information can also be submitted through the force’s online reporting system at the South Yorkshire Police website.

For those who prefer to remain anonymous, information can be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or through their secure online form.

Support for Victims

The investigation highlights the ongoing challenges around sexual violence in urban areas. Support organisations in Sheffield offer specialist services for victims of sexual assault, including the Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (SRASAC) and the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC).

These services provide medical care, counselling, and support through the criminal justice process, recognising the profound impact such crimes have on victims. They operate independently of police investigations, allowing victims to access support regardless of whether they choose to report to authorities.

Ongoing Investigation

As the investigation continues, police have not released details about which specific hotel was involved, likely to protect the victim’s privacy and maintain the integrity of the investigation. The force has confirmed they are following all available lines of enquiry, including reviewing additional CCTV footage from the area and conducting forensic examinations.

The case underscores the importance of hotel security measures and the challenges of investigating crimes in transient accommodation settings. Industry experts note that whilst hotels have improved security protocols in recent years, including enhanced CCTV coverage and key card access systems, vulnerabilities remain.

South Yorkshire Police have assured the public that they are treating this investigation with the utmost priority, deploying specialist detectives from their major crime unit to lead the enquiry. The force emphasises that whilst such incidents are rare, they take any report of sexual assault extremely seriously and are committed to bringing offenders to justice.

Anyone with information about the incident or who recognises the man in the CCTV image is urged to contact police immediately. Even seemingly minor details could prove vital in identifying the suspect and ensuring justice for the victim.
