Police have confirmed the victim of an alleged assault at St Pancras station has been discharged from hospital as detectives continue their investigation into an incident involving far-right activist Tommy Robinson.

The injured man, who was taken to a major trauma centre on Monday night with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, has now left hospital following treatment. British Transport Police are working to bring the 42-year-old suspect, who fled the country hours after the incident, into custody for questioning.

Dramatic footage captured at the busy London transport hub shows Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as Tommy Robinson, standing over an apparently unconscious man lying face-down on the station floor. The EDL co-founder can be heard shouting “you saw him, he came at me” as concerned onlookers called for urgent medical assistance.

A witness who was heading to catch a train described seeing Robinson and an older man “facing off and standing very close to each other” after hearing “a loud commotion and arguing” at the top of an escalator.

The witness claimed Robinson punched the man so hard it apparently knocked him unconscious, describing the alleged assault as “very serious” as the victim “wasn’t moving afterwards.”

Flight to Spain Confirmed

British Transport Police have confirmed that the suspect, from Bedfordshire, boarded a flight out of the UK in the early hours of Tuesday morning, approximately six hours after the 8.40pm incident. A British tourist claimed to have spotted a man matching Robinson’s description on a flight to Tenerife.

Video posted on TikTok with the caption “Spotted Tommy Robinson getting on my flight this morning” showed a man in white socks and trainers, black shorts, t-shirt and cap, with a visible leg tattoo, passing through airport security.

The man was seen briefly lifting his cap to allow staff to verify his face against his passport photo before proceeding through security checks. The timing and appearance match witness descriptions of Robinson leaving the UK.

“Officers have confirmed that the suspect, a 42-year-old man from Bedfordshire, boarded a flight out of the country in the early hours of this morning,” British Transport Police stated on Tuesday.

Defence Claims Emerge

While Robinson has not directly addressed the allegations, he has shared content suggesting he acted in self-defence. A video posted by US activist Don Keith, who describes himself as a “faithful MAGA supporter and patriot,” claims there is “more footage that vindicates Tommy.”

Keith alleged the injured man was “intoxicated and warned to leave Tommy alone” but “proceeded to aggressively rush Robinson anyway,” calling him the “aggressor” in the confrontation.

“He was 100 per cent in the right defending himself,” Keith claimed, adding that Robinson had “work obligations”abroad that explained his departure from the UK.

Keith emphatically denied that the former EDL leader had fled the country as a result of the allegations, insisting pre-existing commitments necessitated his travel.

Violent History

Robinson, 42, has an extensive criminal record including multiple prison sentences for assault, fraud, and contempt of court. Most recently, he was released from prison in May after serving part of an 18-month sentence for contempt of court related to false allegations against a Syrian refugee.

The Luton-born activist founded the English Defence League in 2009, building it into one of Britain’s most prominent far-right organisations before stepping down in 2013. The EDL staged numerous violent protests against Islam and Muslim communities across the UK.

His criminal history includes a 2005 assault conviction, reportedly involving an off-duty police officer, and a 2014 conviction for mortgage fraud that resulted in an 18-month prison sentence. He has also been jailed for using a false passport to enter the United States.

Station Chaos

The incident occurred at the top of the Thameslink escalators inside St Pancras International, one of London’s busiest transport hubs. Witnesses described seeing curtains erected around the injured man as paramedics worked to treat him.

London Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at 8.40pm on Monday following reports of an assault. “We sent an ambulance crew to the scene and treated a man before taking him to a major trauma centre,” a spokesperson said.

In the viral footage, a concerned bystander can be heard urgently calling “can we get someone here, quick” as the man lay motionless on the station floor. Robinson is seen pacing up and down the corridor before walking away down a flight of stairs.

As he departed, Robinson appeared to say “He f*ing came at me, bruv,”** according to witnesses who viewed the footage.

Previous Controversies

Robinson has remained a controversial figure in British politics, frequently making headlines for inflammatory statements and confrontations. In 2019, he was banned from major social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram for posting anti-Muslim content.

He has repeatedly been accused of stoking racial tensions, including during riots across England and Northern Ireland in summer 2024. The unrest erupted after social media users, including Robinson, falsely identified a stabbing suspect as a Muslim immigrant.

Despite multiple convictions and prison sentences, Robinson maintains significant support among far-right groups. His followers have staged numerous rallies calling for his release during various incarcerations.

Investigation Continues

British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses who were at St Pancras station on Monday evening. “Detectives are continuing to work closely to progress the investigation and bring the man into custody for questioning,” a force spokesperson confirmed.

The investigation is being treated as a priority, with officers reviewing CCTV footage from the station’s extensive camera network. Detectives have been conducting arrest enquiries since the incident occurred.

Anyone with information is urged to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 655 of 28 July. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Legal Implications

If arrested and charged, Robinson could face serious assault charges carrying potential prison sentences. The severity of charges would depend on the extent of injuries sustained and circumstances surrounding the confrontation.

Legal experts note that claims of self-defence would need to be substantiated with evidence showing reasonable force was used in response to an imminent threat. The prosecution would examine whether the level of force used was proportionate to any perceived danger.

Robinson’s decision to leave the country immediately after the incident could complicate his defence, though his supporters maintain he had legitimate reasons for travelling.

Political Reactions

The incident has reignited debates about far-right extremism in Britain. Robinson’s activities have long been a source of concern for authorities monitoring extremist movements.

His support base includes international far-right figures, with previous backing from former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and Dutch politician Geert Wilders. More recently, billionaire Elon Musk has called for Robinson’s release from prison, posting “Free Tommy Robinson!” on social media platform X.

The alignment between British far-right movements and international extremist networks continues to worry security experts, who note the potential for online rhetoric to translate into real-world violence.

What Happens Next

British Transport Police face the challenge of securing Robinson’s return to the UK for questioning. While European arrest warrants can be issued for serious offences, the process requires coordination with Spanish authorities.

The investigation will continue regardless of Robinson’s location, with detectives gathering witness statements, analysing CCTV footage, and building a comprehensive picture of events leading to the alleged assault.

For the victim, now recovering after hospital discharge, the incident represents another flashpoint in Britain’s ongoing struggles with political extremism and street violence. The case highlights tensions that continue to simmer beneath the surface of British society.

As detectives work to piece together exactly what happened at St Pancras station, this latest incident involving Tommy Robinson serves as a reminder of the volatile mix of politics, violence, and social media that characterises modern extremist movements.
