FBI Director Kash Patel sparked a social media storm after viewers spotted him wearing a Liverpool FC tie whilst testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and other critical agency matters.

The red tie, bearing the iconic Liverpool crest, became an instant talking point during Tuesday’s heated hearing in Washington, with screenshots circulating widely within minutes. Critics questioned whether the £12 accessory was appropriate for such a serious occasion, whilst the FBI chief faced fierce questioning over his handling of the investigation into Kirk’s murder at Utah Valley University last week.

Patel, 45, appeared before senators to defend his leadership of the bureau just seven months into his tenure, facing particular scrutiny over his premature announcement on social media platform X that a suspect had been arrested in Kirk’s killing. The director was forced to issue a correction 90 minutes later, confirming the person had been released following interrogation.

Kash Patel wearing a Liverpool FC tie to his Senate hearing… very professional,” wrote one X user, capturing the sentiment of many viewers. Another posted: “For his first-ever congressional hearing as the FBI Director, Kash Patel chose to wear a Liverpool FC tie. Is that patriotic for supposedly the top cop of America?”

The football tie controversy emerged as Patel defended the FBI’s rapid response to Kirk’s assassination, emphasising that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was apprehended within 33 hours of the shooting. “It’s important that this FBI is as transparent as possible without jeopardising investigations,” Patel told lawmakers during the four-hour hearing.

Political Assassination Rocks America

Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of conservative youth organisation Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on 10 September whilst speaking to approximately 3,000 attendees at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The shooting occurred at 12:23 PM local time during the first stop of Kirk’s “American Comeback Tour,” which was scheduled to visit multiple university campuses across the country.

Kirk was struck in the neck by a single shot fired from the roof of the Losee Center, approximately 200 yards from where he was conducting his signature “Prove Me Wrong” debate session. Witnesses described seeing blood coming from Kirk’s neck before he slumped backwards from his chair. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly afterwards.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the killing as a “political assassination,” stating: “Charlie Kirk was, first and foremost, a husband and a dad to young children. He was also very much politically involved, and that’s why he was here on campus.”

The assassination sent shockwaves through Washington, with lawmakers from both parties expressing concerns about escalating political violence in America. The killing followed a series of violent political incidents in 2025, including shootings of Minnesota legislators and arson attacks on politicians’ residences.

Swift Arrest Following Family Tip

Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old electrical apprentice from Utah, was arrested on Friday after his father recognised him from FBI surveillance photos and convinced him to meet at the family home. According to law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation, Robinson confessed to his father that he had shot Kirk, initially telling him: “I would rather kill myself than turn myself in.

Utah County prosecutor Jeff Gray revealed that Robinson had been planning the shooting for “just over a week” and had “become increasingly concerned about gay and trans rights” whilst growing apart from his father’s conservative political views. Text messages recovered by investigators showed Robinson had told his roommate about leaving the rifle in bushes near the campus.

The weapon used in the assassination was identified as an older model Mauser .30-06 calibre bolt-action rifle with a mounted scope. Several bullet casings found with the rifle had been engraved with messages, including references to online memes and video games, according to Governor Cox.

Robinson’s family and community expressed shock at his arrest. His grandmother, Debbie Robinson, described him as “squeaky clean” and “considerate,” whilst neighbours characterised the family as “good, down-to-earth, nice people” who were not especially political.

Heated Senate Exchanges

During Tuesday’s testimony, Patel faced intense questioning from Democratic senators over multiple issues, including his firing of senior FBI officials and his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation files. The hearing frequently devolved into shouting matches, with Senator Cory Booker telling Patel “you’re making a mockery of this committee” before the two began shouting over each other.

Patel called Booker “an embarrassment” during their exchange, whilst Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz commented: “It used to be that to see theatre you had to go to the Kennedy Centre. Now, apparently you need only go to the Senate Judiciary Committee.”

Senator Adam Schiff pressed Patel on allegations that FBI agents had been fired for political reasons, with three high-ranking officials who were dismissed in August now suing the administration for what they claim was a “campaign of retribution.” Patel maintained that terminations were based solely on evidence and performance, stating: “Any termination at the FBI was a decision that I made based on the evidence that I have as director of the FBI.”

Regarding the Epstein files, Patel told senators there was “no credible information” that Jeffrey Epstein trafficked young women to anyone besides himself, though both Republican and Democratic lawmakers urged greater transparency in releasing documents from the case.

Liverpool FC Connection Revealed

This was not Patel’s first public display of support for the Premier League champions. In April 2025, he posted a photo on social media wearing the same tie alongside the caption: “#YNWA… Liverpool Premier League champs. Our good luck tie.” He had also been photographed wearing the tie in December before being sworn in as FBI Director.

The choice of attire drew criticism from across the political spectrum, with some Liverpool supporters expressing dismay. To everyone that thought something about FBI Director Kash Patel is off or wrong, we now have a definitive answer: he’s a Liverpool fan,” joked one rival football supporter on social media.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino later revealed on Fox News that the investigation had uncovered evidence of Robinson’s “obsession” with Kirk, including text messages where the suspect stated he had “the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk” because “some hatred cannot be negotiated with.”

Broader Implications for Political Violence

The Kirk assassination has intensified concerns about political violence in America, occurring during what experts describe as a period of deepening division. START researcher Michael Jensen recorded 150 politically motivated attacks in the first half of 2025, almost twice the number during the same period in 2024.

President Donald Trump, who awarded Kirk a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom, blamed the “radical left” for the killing and expressed support for pursuing the death penalty against Robinson. “In Utah, you have death penalty, and a good governor there,” Trump said. “The governor is intent on the death penalty in this case and he should be.”

Robinson faces charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, and obstruction of justice. He is being held without bail at Utah County Jail, with his next hearing scheduled for 29 September. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown confirmed that prosecutors are considering all options, stating “everything is on the table” regarding potential death penalty charges.

Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, vowed to continue her late husband’s legacy, announcing that Turning Point USA’s American Comeback Tour would proceed as scheduled. “The movement my husband built will not die. I refuse to let that happen,” she said in her first public statement following the assassination.

As America grapples with the aftermath of another political killing, questions remain about how to balance free speech and open political discourse with growing security concerns. Some lawmakers are now reconsidering the viability of outdoor political events and campus speaking tours that have long been a staple of American democracy.
