King Charles Weighing Up Removal of Prince Andrew From Order of the Garter, Reports Suggest

King Charles is actively considering stripping Prince Andrew of his membership in the Order of the Garter, according to the Daily Mail, which reports top-level discussions are currently under way at Buckingham Palace.

The potential move comes in the wake of fresh scandals surrounding the Duke of York, with the historic chivalric honour understood to be highly prized by Andrew. Its removal would represent a devastating blow to the embattled royal.

According to the Daily Mail, the 348-year-old Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III in 1348, stands as Britain’s most senior order of chivalry. The monarch possesses the power to strip members of this prestigious honour, though it is understood Charles would strongly prefer his younger brother to voluntarily relinquish the title rather than face forced removal.

Historic Precedent

The last person to be removed from the Order of the Garter was Emperor Hirohito of Japan after his country entered the Second World War in 1941, the Daily Mail reports. However, he was subsequently restored to the order by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1971 when he made a state visit to Britain.

Other historical figures stripped of the honour include Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary during the First World War, demonstrating that such removals typically occur only in the gravest circumstances.

The rarity of such action underscores the seriousness with which Buckingham Palace would view any decision to remove Andrew from the order, marking a historic moment in the modern royal family’s handling of internal crises.

Alternative Measures Considered

According to the Daily Mail, another option being discussed involves stripping Andrew of his Duke of York title entirely. However, this route would require an Act of Parliament and considerable parliamentary time, making it a less likely course of action given the legislative complications involved.

The report suggests palace officials are weighing various options for further distancing the monarchy from Andrew whilst managing the delicate family dynamics involved in such decisions.

Years of Exclusion

Prince Andrew has already faced significant consequences for his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the allegations made by Virginia Giuffre. He was stripped of his military titles and HRH designation following his disastrous 2019 Newsnight interview.

Since 2022, Andrew has been banned from attending the public-facing elements of Garter Day ceremonies at Windsor Castle, though he has reportedly been permitted to attend private lunches and investitures as a compromise measure.

The Duke of York became a Knight of the Garter in 2006 and was promoted to Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order in 2011. Despite his exile from public royal duties, he has maintained his position within the order, continuing to hold the rank even as he remains frozen out of most ceremonial occasions.

Growing Pressure

Royal experts have increasingly called for stronger action against Andrew. Veteran royal commentator Jennie Bond recently told The Mirror that the public wants another show of punishment for the duke.

“It seems impossible to force him out of Royal Lodge, but he could certainly be removed from the Order of the Garter,” Bond stated. “It is a hideous quandary for the King, but Andrew’s association with Epstein, who so grievously preyed on young girls, is now tainting the monarchy and all the good work it does. Something has to be done.”

However, fellow royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has warned that revoking the Garter could risk bringing the Royal Family into disrepute, noting that such revocations have historically only occurred in extremis, usually during wartime.

Fitzwilliams suggested the magnitude of removing Andrew from the order would naturally draw further attention to his position within the Firm, potentially creating exactly the kind of scrutiny King Charles wishes to avoid.

Timing Considerations

The reported discussions come as Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous autobiography is set for release on 21 October, with the book reportedly containing fresh claims against Prince Andrew.

King Charles is scheduled to host a reception at St James’s Palace on the same day as the book’s release, ahead of the UK-hosted Western Balkans Leaders’ Summit in London on 22 October. The timing has raised questions about how the palace will manage the public relations challenge.

Family Tensions

According to the Daily Mail, the King faces a difficult balancing act between protecting the monarchy’s reputation and managing his relationship with his younger brother. Palace sources suggest Charles remains sensitive to family considerations even as he recognises the need to distance the institution from Andrew’s controversies.

Prince William has reportedly been instrumental in limiting Andrew’s public appearances, having intervened alongside his father to keep the Duke of York away from high-profile royal events including Trooping the Colour and the public elements of Garter Day.

The Prince of Wales is understood to believe that Andrew’s continued association with royal ceremonial occasions damages the monarchy’s standing with the public, particularly younger generations who view the Epstein scandal with particular revulsion.

Limited Options

The King’s choices for further action against Andrew remain constrained by constitutional and practical considerations. Removing him from Counsellor of State status would require legislation, as would stripping his dukedom.

The Order of the Garter represents one of the few remaining honours the monarch can remove by personal prerogative, making it a more accessible tool for expressing royal displeasure without requiring parliamentary involvement.

However, royal insiders warn that such a dramatic step could prove counterproductive if it generates sympathy for Andrew or creates the impression of excessive punishment for someone who has never been criminally charged.

Public Opinion Divided

Polling suggests the British public remains divided on how to handle Prince Andrew. Whilst many believe he should face further consequences for his association with Epstein, others question whether additional punishments serve any meaningful purpose given his already near-total exclusion from royal life.

Andrew currently resides at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, having successfully resisted pressure from King Charles to move to the smaller Frogmore Cottage. The standoff over his residence has become symbolic of the duke’s determination to maintain whatever vestiges of royal status remain available to him.

The Duke of York has reportedly sought to regain some of his former military titles and believes he should be included at royal and state events despite the damage his reputation has caused to the monarchy.

No Timeline Announced

According to the Daily Mail, there is no immediate timeline for any decision on Andrew’s future within the Order of the Garter. Palace officials are understood to be carefully considering all implications before taking action that would mark one of the most significant internal royal punishments in living memory.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman declined to comment on what the palace described as private family matters, maintaining the institution’s longstanding policy of not publicly discussing internal royal deliberations.

The coming weeks will prove crucial in determining whether King Charles opts for the nuclear option of removing his brother from Britain’s most prestigious chivalric order, or whether the status quo of private inclusion and public exclusion continues to serve as an uncomfortable compromise.
