Victim rushed to hospital with ‘serious injuries’ after vehicle falls from upper level of Car Park 1 in horror incident

A MAN is fighting for his life after a car plunged from a multi-storey car park at Luton Airport this morning, sparking a massive emergency response.

The victim was rushed to hospital with what police described as “serious injuries” after the single-vehicle incident at Car Park 1 just before 11am on Sunday.

It is understood the car fell from a higher level of the multi-storey structure, though authorities have not confirmed the exact circumstances of the terrifying incident.

Massive emergency response

Bedfordshire Police confirmed that a huge emergency squad was dispatched to the scene, including police officers, ambulance crews and fire services.

The East of England Ambulance Service mobilised an extensive response team comprising “an ambulance, an ambulance officer vehicle, a rapid response vehicle, the Hazardous Area Response Team and the Beds and Herts Critical Care Scheme” to the airport car park.

A Bedfordshire Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services were called shortly before 11am to an incident involving a single vehicle at a multi-storey car park at London Luton Airport.

Police, ambulance and fire crews attended the scene. One person has been taken to hospital with injuries which are thought to be serious.

Airport operations continue

Despite the shocking incident, Luton Airport confirmed there was “no disruption to wider airport operations” and flights were continuing as normal.

However, arriving vehicles were being redirected to the airport’s mid-stay car park while airport staff managed the exit of departing vehicles from the affected area.

A spokesperson for Luton Airport said: “Emergency services were called shortly before 11am following a single vehicle incident at multi-storey car park 1.

“Following the incident, one person has been taken to hospital for further assessment.

Police appeal for witnesses

Investigators are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward as they work to establish the full circumstances.

The car park where the incident occurred – Terminal Car Park 1 – is the airport’s main multi-storey facility, located just a four-minute walk from the terminal via a direct link footbridge.

The structure offers covered parking and is one of the busiest parking facilities at the UK’s fourth-largest London airport.

History of car park incidents

The incident comes less than two years after a devastating fire destroyed another multi-storey car park at the airport in October 2023.

That blaze at Terminal Car Park 2 involved more than 1,300 vehicles and caused the partial collapse of the building, requiring more than 100 firefighters to bring it under control.

The destroyed car park is currently being rebuilt, with construction of a new four-storey facility expected to be completed by late 2025.

£2bn expansion plans

The shocking incident occurs just months after Chancellor Rachel Reeves gave the green light to the government’s ambitious plans to expand Luton Airport.

Labour hopes to nearly double the airport’s capacity from 18 million to 32 million passengers in a massive expansion project that would include construction of a brand new terminal.

The huge development is projected to cost over £2billion, with the government hoping the expansion will deliver a significant boost to the economy.

Investigation continues

Emergency services remained at the scene throughout Sunday morning as investigators worked to piece together what led to the vehicle falling from the car park.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Bedfordshire Police on 101.

The airport has confirmed that passengers should not expect any delays or changes to their flights, with operations continuing as normal despite the emergency response.
