Alton Towers evacuated hundreds of visitors from its popular Forbidden Valley area on Monday afternoon after fire broke out in a toilet facility, with emergency crews racing to the Staffordshire theme park as smoke billowed from an electrical extractor fan.

The blaze erupted at approximately 3pm BST when a staff member discovered flames in the toilet block near the newly-opened Toxicator ride and Nemesis Reborn rollercoaster. Park officials immediately ordered the evacuation of the entire Forbidden Valley section, sparking confusion and traffic chaos as families were forced to abandon queues and leave the area.

Staffordshire Fire Service dispatched two crews to the scene, arriving to find park staff had already extinguished the flames. A fire service spokesperson confirmed the electrical extractor fan fire had damaged one toilet cubicle whilst smoke had filled an adjacent facility, requiring extensive ventilation work before the area could be declared safe.

Visitors Report Chaos and Poor Communication

Social media erupted with reports of the evacuation as bewildered guests took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their experiences. One visitor posted: “Never had a whole area of Alton Towers evacuated before! I’m confused as hell. I hope nothing too serious has happened.”

The incident triggered significant disruption across the resort, with visitors complaining about inadequate communication from staff. One frustrated guest claimed they had walked 25 minutes with two elderly relatives towards Forbidden Valley only to be turned away, writing: “No communication with customers, nobody blocking off routes. Shambles.”

Traffic chaos ensued as the evacuation coincided with attempts to leave the park. Several visitors reported car park entrances had been closed, forcing lengthy detours. “We now can’t even leave the park through the car park entrance we want,” one angry customer posted on social media.

Fire Service Confirms Electrical Fault

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service provided crucial details about the incident, confirming crews were called at 3pm to reports of a small fire at the resort. “A fire in an electrical extractor fan had been put out by resort staff prior to our arrival,” a spokesperson stated.

The fire service revealed one toilet sustained fire damage whilst another was “smoke-logged” from the blaze. Crews spent approximately 90 minutes ventilating the area and ensuring the fire had not spread to adjacent structures before departing at 4:30pm.

No injuries were reported in the incident, with the affected toilet facility unoccupied when the fire broke out. Fire crews used specialist equipment to check for any hidden fire spread within the building’s structure before giving the all-clear.

Park Reopens After Hour-Long Closure

Alton Towers confirmed the precautionary evacuation lasted approximately one hour, with Forbidden Valley reopening to guests by 4pm. The rest of the theme park remained operational throughout the incident, though visitor flow disruptions affected adjacent areas.

An Alton Towers spokesperson addressed the incident: “Earlier today, a small, contained fire was discovered by a colleague in a toilet facility within the Forbidden Valley area of the Resort. Our team quickly put out the fire, and as a precaution, we temporarily evacuated the area while we established the cause.”

The spokesperson added: “We’d like to thank our guests for their cooperation. The safety and wellbeing of our guests and team members is always our top priority.”

Forbidden Valley Houses Park’s Newest Attractions

The evacuation affected one of Alton Towers’ most popular areas, home to the recently refurbished Nemesis Reborn rollercoaster and the brand-new Toxicator ride which opened in March 2025. The £multi-million Forbidden Valley underwent a complete redesign for 2024, transforming from its previous post-apocalyptic theme to a high-tech research facility run by the fictional Phalanx organisation.

Toxicator, a HUSS suspended topspin ride, had already faced disruption on its opening day in March when a sewage pipe burst forced a nearly three-hour closure. The attraction, built on the former site of the Ripsaw ride, features back-to-back seating and face-down holds, requiring riders to be between 1.4m and 1.95m in height.

The area also houses Nemesis Reborn, the iconic inverted coaster that reopened in 2024 following a year-long refurbishment. The ride, which reaches speeds of 50mph with four inversions, remains one of the park’s most popular attractions alongside Galactica and the Forbidden Valley SkyRide station.

History of Incidents at Popular Resort

Monday’s fire marks the latest in a series of incidents at the Staffordshire theme park. In 2007, a fire broke out in the same area’s SkyRide station, leading to a partial evacuation. The resort gained international attention in 2015 when The Smiler rollercoaster crashed, seriously injuring several riders in an incident that led to significant safety reforms.

More recently, the park faced criticism in March 2025 when the debut of Toxicator was marred by a sewage leak that forced the closure of much of Forbidden Valley on the first day of the main season. Large queues for guest services formed as visitors sought compensation for the disruption.

The resort, operated by Merlin Entertainments Group, attracts millions of visitors annually to its 500-acre site near the village of Alton. Originally a stately home of the Earls of Shrewsbury, Alton Towers opened as a theme park in 1980 and now features over 40 rides and attractions.

Peak Season Disruption

The fire occurred during the busy summer holiday period when the park experiences its highest visitor numbers. Alton Towers operates extended hours during peak season, with the park open until 8pm on selected dates as part of its “Alton After Dark” events.

The resort recently announced its November fireworks spectacular dates for 2025, scheduled for 7-9 November, which traditionally marks the end of the main season. The three-night event features projection mapping on the historic Towers building, laser shows and pyrotechnics, with rides operating in darkness.

Industry experts noted that whilst fires at theme parks are relatively rare, electrical faults remain a common cause when incidents do occur. The quick response by trained staff in extinguishing the blaze before fire crews arrived likely prevented more significant damage and disruption.

As investigations continue into the exact cause of the electrical fault, Alton Towers faces questions about communication protocols during emergency evacuations. The resort’s management will likely review procedures to address visitor complaints about the lack of clear information during Monday’s incident.
