Major rail disruption has paralyzed Birmingham New Street Station, affecting millions of passengers as damaged overhead power lines force widespread cancellations and delays of up to two hours across Britain’s busiest rail hub outside London.

The damage to 25,000-volt overhead electric wires was reported at 1:40pm near Curzon Street on the approach to Birmingham New Street, blocking most platforms and creating chaos for travelers using the station that handles over 47 million visitors annually.

“At 1.40pm damaged overhead power lines were reported on the approach to Birmingham New Street station near to Curzon Street,” a Network Rail spokesperson confirmed.

The incident has crippled services for multiple train operators including Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, London Northwestern Railway, Transport for Wales, and West Midlands Railway.

Routes to Coventry, Walsall, Wolverhampton, and Rugeley face severe delays, cancellations, and diversions with National Rail warning of “major disruption” expected until the end of the day.

“Most platforms are unavailable at Birmingham New Street due to an issue with the overhead electric wires,” National Rail stated in an online alert.

Passengers report delays of up to 120 minutes with many services completely cancelled.

The disruption extends far beyond Birmingham, affecting routes between London Euston and Edinburgh, Plymouth and Derby, and services to Manchester, Cardiff, and York.

There will likely be some disruption throughout the rest of today,” the Network Rail spokesperson warned.

Birmingham New Street serves as the central hub of Britain’s railway network, with over 5 million passengers changing trains annually at the station.

The station, which underwent a £550 million redevelopment completed in 2015, is ranked as the busiest in the UK outside London based on passenger footfall.

Network Rail engineers arrived on site shortly after the fault was reported to assess the damage and plan repairs.

Teams are on site to assess the damage and plan the repairs,” officials confirmed.

The overhead line equipment carries 25,000 volts of electricity to power electric trains and is critical infrastructure for the network.

Previous incidents at the station have shown how vulnerable the system is to overhead wire failures, with extreme temperatures in July 2022 causing similar widespread disruption.

During that incident, Network Rail’s Central route director Denise Wetton said: “As predicted the extreme temperatures have impacted our overhead cables which power trains.”

Today’s failure affects infrastructure between Sandwell & Dudley and Birmingham New Street, meaning lines towards the station are blocked.

West Midlands Railway announced that no trains will run from Birmingham New Street, Redditch, or Bromsgrove for the remainder of the day.

Due to damage to the overhead electric wires at Birmingham New Street, services are being cancelled, diverted or delayed,” a West Midlands Railway spokesperson said.

CrossCountry services between major cities including Plymouth, Manchester, Cardiff, and York face severe disruption.

Avanti West Coast trains between London Euston and Scotland via Birmingham are experiencing major delays or cancellations.

Transport for Wales services to Chester, Aberystwyth, Shrewsbury, and Holyhead are all affected by the overhead wire damage.

London Northwestern Railway routes between London, Northampton, Coventry, and Liverpool via Birmingham face significant delays.

Passengers with tickets dated today can use them tomorrow, July 3, according to rail operators.

“Tickets will be accepted on services operating before and after your cancelled service,” officials stated.

Rail replacement buses have been requested, though passengers are warned these may be busier than usual.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges with overhead line infrastructure across Britain’s electrified rail network.

Industry sources familiar with overhead line failures cite multiple potential causes including power supply failures, component damage, and wildlife interference.

“There are lots of different components that make up our overhead line equipment,” Network Rail explains on its website about such failures.

The timing couldn’t be worse for commuters and leisure travelers during the busy summer period.

Birmingham New Street’s role as a major interchange means delays cascade across the entire network, affecting destinations nationwide.

Rail users took to social media to express frustration at the lack of information and lengthy delays.

Passengers should check before they travel, allow extra time, and be prepared for some journeys to be disrupted at short notice,” Network Rail advised.

The station typically sees approximately 170,000 passengers daily, making it a critical transport hub for the West Midlands region.

Today’s incident adds to a challenging year for rail passengers who have already faced industrial action and service reliability issues.

Compensation may be available for passengers experiencing delays, with train operators advising travelers to keep tickets and journey details.

“You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today,” National Rail stated.

Alternative transport arrangements include local bus services accepting rail tickets and taxi services from the station’s Navigation Street rank.

Network Rail has not provided an estimate for when full service will resume, leaving thousands of passengers facing uncertain journey times.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of Britain’s aging rail infrastructure to technical failures.

As engineers work to restore power and reopen lines, passengers face a long evening of disruption at one of Britain’s busiest stations.
