The brother of an expectant father who died just hours before the birth of his twin boys has spoken of his “pure shock” after the 36-year-old suffered a fatal asthma attack on his way home from work.

Andrew Muncie, from Loughborough in Leicestershire, was rushed to the Adult Intensive Care Unit at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham on 7 August after suffering a stress-induced asthma attack whilst driving home from his office job. The attack triggered cardiac arrest, leaving his brain starved of oxygen for an estimated 20 to 30 minutes due to the remote location of the incident.

Tragically, Andrew died “suddenly” four days later on 11 August, just one day before his fiancée gave birth to twin boys in the same hospital where he passed away. The couple also share a three-year-old daughter, who has been described as his “absolute world.”

Corey Muncie, Andrew’s younger brother, has called him “a proper staple in the family” and spoke of the devastating moment he learned of the tragedy. “He was everything you would want in an older brother and more,” Corey told LeicestershireLive.

“I was at home when my mum rang me to tell me what had happened and it was pure shock, it stunned me completely. I hugged my partner and then it was just panic and I started to rush to get to the hospital.”

The incident occurred as Andrew was driving home along Back Lane, a remote stretch of road on his regular commute. The isolation of the location meant crucial time was lost before anyone could reach him to administer CPR, resulting in prolonged oxygen deprivation to his brain.

Following an agonising 84-hour wait at the hospital, Andrew’s family received the devastating news they had been dreading. Despite their hopes and prayers, medical staff confirmed there was nothing more they could do.

In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Andrew’s fiancée gave birth to their twin boys the following day, 12 August, in the same hospital where Andrew had passed away surrounded by his loving family. The newborns will never meet their father, who died just hours before their arrival.

Corey shared an emotional tribute on Facebook, writing: “Find it hard to write this… still beyond belief that this is a reality but here I am writing and struggling to find the words… The man is literally a superhero. There are no words for the endless amount of love, family and friends had for your kind, funny, selfless, generous and beautiful soul.”

Andrew’s cousin, 34-year-old Arran Ashmole, felt “compelled” to help support the grieving family and established a GoFundMe page that has already raised £17,221 at the time of writing.

Writing on the fundraising page, Arran revealed Andrew’s final act of generosity: “One of Andrew’s last wishes in his will was to be an organ donor. He was selfless, kind and giving and it comes as no surprise that he continued this beyond his passing.”

“Amazingly he has already saved the lives of 5 other people through his selfless nature and will continue to help more. His legacy lives on not only through his children but in the additional lives he has saved.”

The GoFundMe appeal emphasises the devastating impact on Andrew’s young family, particularly his three-year-old daughter who “has lost her hero so suddenly and unexpectedly.” The fundraiser aims to ease financial pressure on his fiancée, who now faces the daunting prospect of raising three children alone whilst on maternity leave.

We held his hand one last time as he passed away on Monday 11th August 2025, just one day before his twin boys arrived safely into this world,” Arran wrote. “They were born in the same hospital that he passed away surrounded by his loving family.”

Andrew was remembered as being “many things to many people” – a son, brother, partner and friend – but his most cherished role was that of father. His sudden death has left a void in the lives of his three children, who will grow up knowing their father only through the memories and stories shared by those who loved him.

The fundraising page poignantly notes: “Please help us to ease the pressure as much as possible for his young family. They not only have to face life without one of the most important people to them but now face the financial difficulty of being a single mother, on maternity leave, raising three children.”

Arran reflected on the cruel timing of the tragedy, writing: “On Thursday 7th August 2025, a day like any other, Andrew dropped his daughter off at nursery and headed to work. After his usual day in the office he commenced his commute home.”

“There were so many small events and decisions that could have made the difference but that’s not what fate had decided.”

The remote location where Andrew suffered his asthma attack proved critical, with the GoFundMe page explaining: “Due to the remote location where this incident occurred, Andrew didn’t have the luxury of anybody getting to him quickly enough to administer CPR in time.

Andrew’s organ donation has provided some solace to the grieving family, knowing that even in death, he has given the gift of life to others. His decision to register as an organ donor means his legacy extends beyond his own children to the five individuals whose lives he has already saved.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones. For Andrew’s family, the arrival of his twin boys is bittersweet – a celebration of new life forever tinged with the sorrow of his absence.

As the family navigates their grief whilst welcoming the twins into the world, the community’s support through the GoFundMe campaign offers some comfort during an unimaginably difficult time. The funds raised will help provide stability for Andrew’s fiancée and their three children as they face an uncertain future without him.

“Thank you for all of your help and support in Andrew’s memory,” the fundraising page concludes, as friends, family and strangers alike rally around a family torn apart by sudden tragedy.
