What was supposed to be a joyous and historic celebration for Liverpool Football Club turned into a moment of chaos and terror as a car drove into a crowd of fans on Water Street, Liverpool city centre. The incident occurred amid the club’s highly anticipated Premier League victory parade, which had drawn hundreds of thousands of supporters into the streets.

Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic and confusion as the vehicle suddenly entered the packed street where jubilant fans had gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s 20th top-flight league title. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and an investigation is now underway to determine the full extent of the incident and its causes.

The celebrations, which included an open-top bus procession with the entire squad and staff, were designed to be a moment of unity and joy. But the car incident has overshadowed the event, raising serious questions about crowd control and public safety during large-scale gatherings.

What Happened on Water Street?

At approximately 4:30 PM, just as the Liverpool victory parade was passing through Water Street — a key segment of the 15-kilometre celebration route — a car broke through the barriers and entered the crowd. Witnesses described the vehicle as accelerating toward groups of fans before coming to a stop after hitting several individuals.

“I heard people screaming, and then there was just chaos. Everyone started running,” one witness told local media. “There were kids, families… everyone was just trying to get out of the way.”

Multiple reports suggest that several individuals were struck, although the full number of injuries has yet to be officially confirmed by authorities. Emergency services responded within minutes, cordoning off the area and treating those who were hurt. Aerial footage from the scene showed a large emergency presence, including ambulances, police cars, and an air ambulance that landed nearby.

Crowd control barriers and debris were scattered across the street, evidence of the sudden and forceful intrusion that disrupted what was meant to be a day of celebration.

Emergency Services Respond

The swift reaction by Merseyside Police and ambulance crews potentially prevented further injury. Emergency responders immediately provided aid to those injured while ensuring the rest of the crowd was safely redirected away from the incident zone.

A spokesperson from the North West Ambulance Service confirmed that “multiple casualties” had been assessed at the scene and at least five individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment. As of the latest update, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, though several victims are being treated for fractures and trauma.

An air ambulance was also deployed, highlighting the severity of the situation. Police cordons remain in place as forensic officers examine the vehicle and the surrounding area for evidence.

Crowd Panic and Injuries

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, widespread panic gripped the crowd. Thousands of fans, including young children and elderly supporters, fled the scene in distress. Some tripped or fell in the rush to escape, further complicating the rescue efforts.

The emotional toll was visible. Several witnesses described the scene as “horrific,” saying that joy turned into fear in a matter of seconds. “People were laughing and singing one moment — the next, they were crying and scrambling to get away,” another witness said.

As of now, officials have not confirmed whether the incident was intentional or accidental. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage are currently being reviewed as part of an ongoing investigation.

Statements from Authorities

Merseyside Police have issued a preliminary statement acknowledging the incident and confirming that a male driver has been taken into custody. We are aware of the incident involving a vehicle and a group of individuals during the Liverpool Football Club parade. One suspect is currently being questioned,” a police spokesperson said.

The motive for the incident remains unclear. Authorities are urging the public not to speculate until more information becomes available. “We understand the public’s concern and will provide updates as soon as we can,” the statement continued.

The Liverpool City Council has also released a message urging calm and cooperation. “We are shocked and saddened by the events on Water Street. Our thoughts are with all those affected, and we are working closely with emergency services to ensure the situation is fully assessed,” a council spokesperson said.
