Eni Aluko has stepped back from her presenting role at the prestigious Women’s Football Awards following backlash over controversial remarks made about fellow football pundit Ian Wright. The controversy began after an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, where Aluko suggested that male pundits like Wright could be taking up too much space in the women’s game. The resulting media firestorm led to an apology, a rebuttal from Wright, and ITV taking a public stance in his favor.

The BBC Woman’s Hour Comments That Sparked the Storm

On April 24, 2025, Aluko joined BBC’s Woman’s Hour to discuss gender equity in football media. During the segment, she remarked:

“I’ve worked with Ian a long time and I think he’s a brilliant broadcaster, but I think he’s aware of just how much he’s doing in the women’s game. I think he should be aware of that.”

These comments triggered immediate criticism, particularly for singling out Wright—a man widely seen as one of the women’s game’s most vocal male supporters. Many online called the remarks unfair and divisive, especially considering Wright’s track record, including his support of England’s Lionesses and vocal presence during the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022.

Public Backlash and Media Response

Public sentiment quickly turned against Aluko, with fans and pundits defending Wright as an ally. On social media, the hashtag #StandWithWright trended, with users pointing to Wright’s extensive work promoting the women’s game. Many cited his regular commentary during WSL matches on ITV and his appearances on Match of the Day, where he’s often praised women players and addressed inequalities in the sport.

Aluko’s Public Apology and Wright’s Firm Response

Following the backlash, Aluko posted an apology on her official Twitter/X account, stating:

“It was wrong for Ian’s name to be raised in that conversation, and for that I sincerely apologise.”

However, Ian Wright responded through his own post, rejecting the apology and emphasizing his emotional hurt:

“You can’t just throw someone’s name out like that and walk it back. I was really hurt by those comments.”

His rejection gained widespread support from fans and media colleagues, many of whom echoed his frustration at being called out despite a proven track record of allyship.

ITV’s Official Support for Wright

In the days following the controversy, ITV—where both Wright and Aluko have appeared as pundits—issued a public statement, firmly backing Ian Wright. In a quote published by GB News, ITV stated:

“Ian Wright is an incredible advocate, ally and brilliant broadcaster of women’s football.”

There was no similar expression of support for Aluko. In fact, sources told SportBible that ITV bosses were “furious” and “traumatised” by the fallout from her comments, raising questions about her future at the network.

Aluko Steps Down from the Women’s Football Awards

As the heat intensified, Aluko voluntarily stepped down from her hosting duties for the Women’s Football Awards. In a public statement shared via her social media, she wrote:

“The Women’s Football Awards hold a special place in my heart… However, I’ve decided to take a step back from being part of the hosting lineup this year. I don’t want anything to deflect from the joy, recognition, and celebration that this event is all about.”

Replacing her on stage will be Gabby Logan and Jamie Carragher, according to official announcements.
