The FBI and Department of Justice have released approximately 11 hours of surveillance footage from outside Jeffrey Epstein’s jail cell on the night of his death, concluding that the disgraced financier died by suicide and debunking long-held conspiracy theories about his demise.

The footage, captured between 7:40 p.m. on August 9 and 6:40 a.m. on August 10, 2019, at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City, shows the 66-year-old financier being escorted to his cell by guards but reveals no one else entering the area until his body was discovered. The video shows a grey-haired Epstein in an orange jumpsuit being led to his cell by a guard at 7:49 p.m., walking down a small flight of stairs and across a common area.

A two-page memo from the Justice Department, reviewed by multiple news outlets, states that investigators found “no incriminating ‘client list'” and “no credible evidence that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals.” The findings represent the first time the Trump administration has officially contradicted conspiracy theories about Epstein’s activities and death.

Investigation Findings Disappoint Conspiracy Theorists

The joint FBI-DOJ investigation concluded that no further charges will be filed in connection with Epstein, who was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges when he died. The memo states investigators found no “evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties.”

“The FBI enhanced the relevant footage by increasing its contrast, balancing the color, and improving its sharpness for greater clarity and viewability,” the memo states. According to officials, the enhanced video confirms no one entered Epstein’s cell area between when he was locked in at approximately 10:40 p.m. and when guards found him unresponsive at 6:30 a.m.

FBI Director Kash Patel told podcast host Joe Rogan that those expecting revelations would be disappointed. “If I had it, I’d be the first guy to bring this case hard and fast,” Patel said during the interview. “If there was a video of some guy or gal committing felonies on an island and I’m in charge, don’t you think you’d see it?”

Political Pressure Mounts

The release follows months of pressure from Trump supporters demanding transparency about Epstein’s connections to powerful figures. Attorney General Pam Bondi had promised to deliver “a lot of flight logs, a lot of names, a lot of information” during a Fox News appearance in February.

However, the initial document release in February drew fierce criticism from Trump’s base. The materials, distributed in binders marked “The Epstein Files: Phase 1” to pro-Trump influencers at the White House, contained mostly previously public information.

THIS IS NOT WHAT WE OR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ASKED FOR and a complete disappointment,” Representative Anna Paulina Luna posted at the time. “GET US THE INFORMATION WE ASKED FOR!”

The backlash intensified after Bondi claimed the FBI was reviewing “tens of thousands of videos” containing child pornography. During his Rogan interview, Patel appeared to contradict this claim, dismissing the possibility of incriminating videos of powerful Epstein associates.

Trump-Musk Feud Erupts Over Files

The Epstein case took an unexpected turn during Patel’s podcast appearance when Tesla CEO Elon Musk accused President Trump of being named in the files. Musk posted on X that Trump “is in the Epstein files” and “that is the real reason they have not been made public.

Rogan, reading the tweet mid-interview, exclaimed “What the f— are they doing?” and called it “a crazy thing to say.” Patel declined to address the accusation, stating “I’m not participating in any of that conversation between Elon and Trump. That’s way outside my lane.”

The explosive claim came amid a broader feud between Trump and Musk over government spending legislation, with Trump threatening to cancel billions in contracts supporting Musk’s businesses.

Previous Footage Destroyed

The release of this footage comes after prosecutors acknowledged in 2020 that surveillance video from Epstein’s first suicide attempt in July 2019 was accidentally destroyed. Following that incident, Epstein was placed on suicide watch before being moved to the Special Housing Unit where he later died.

According to a 2023 DOJ Inspector General report, multiple failures by correctional staff contributed to Epstein’s death. Guards failed to conduct required 30-minute checks, falsified records, and the facility’s camera system had longstanding deficiencies that resulted in limited recorded evidence.

Two correctional officers were criminally charged with falsifying records but avoided prosecution through deferred prosecution agreements. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to prosecute other staff members who created false documentation.

Victims Remain Focus

Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino emphasized that protecting victims remains the priority. “Remember, we’re not gonna’ re-victimize women. We’re not gonna’ put that s*** back out there,” he said during a Fox News appearance.

The DOJ memo states that much of the case material remains sealed due to sensitive victim information involving over 1,000 individuals. Officials stressed that “perpetuating unfounded theories about Epstein serves neither” the goals of combating child exploitation nor bringing justice to victims.

Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence for child sex trafficking and related offenses. She was convicted in December 2021 of recruiting and grooming teenage girls for sexual abuse by Epstein.

Medical Examiner Stands by Findings

The New York City medical examiner ruled Epstein’s death a suicide by hanging, a conclusion that has withstood multiple challenges. Epstein’s lawyers hired pathologist Michael Baden to conduct an independent investigation, but official findings remain unchanged.

Former Attorney General William Barr, who initially expressed suspicion about the circumstances, later described Epstein’s death as “a perfect storm of screw-ups” rather than a conspiracy. The FBI’s investigation found no evidence of criminal involvement in the death.

Epstein had been denied bail in July 2019 after offering $600,000 to wear an ankle monitor at his Manhattan townhouse. He was considered a flight risk due to taking 20 international flights in the previous 18 months.

Little Saint James Island Investigation

Patel addressed speculation about Epstein’s private Caribbean island during his Rogan interview, stating his team had reviewed everything they were given lawful access to from Little Saint James. The 72-acre island was allegedly a focal point of Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.

When asked about video evidence from the island, Patel gave a five-word response: “We don’t have those videos.” He urged anyone with credible information to contact the FBI, saying “The best resource we have is the American people in the world. Get me new information, and I will run that down.”

The FBI director, who took office 100 days ago, defended his handling of the case. I can’t be held to account for 20 years of failures,” he told Rogan, while acknowledging public frustration over Epstein’s 2008 plea deal that allowed him to avoid federal charges.

Documents Show Limited New Information

The evidence reviewed by investigators included over 300GB of data from hard drives, network databases, and physical locations. An evidence list released by the DOJ cataloged items obtained through searches of Epstein’s properties, including recording devices, computers, and a CD labeled “girl pics nude book 4.”

Despite the extensive material, officials found no evidence supporting theories about blackmail operations or a client list. The conclusion contradicts years of speculation fueled by Epstein’s connections to politicians, celebrities, and business leaders.

As Patel acknowledged to Rogan, the release is unlikely to satisfy everyone: “We will never be able to convince everyone.” The footage and findings, while providing closure on the circumstances of Epstein’s death, leave many questions about his crimes and associates unanswered.
