Brixton Underground station has been temporarily closed after a major fire erupted at a storage unit on Electric Avenue, with 70 firefighters battling the blaze that sent a large plume of smoke towering above the busy shopping street.
The London Fire Brigade was called to the incident at 9:40am on Monday morning, deploying crews from multiple stations across South London to tackle the fire. Residents and businesses near the scene have been advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to heavy smoke in the area.
Transport for London confirmed that Brixton Tube station, the southern terminus of the Victoria line, has been temporarily closed due to “smoke travel” from the nearby fire. Stockwell station, the next stop north on the line, is operating as exit-only with the final section of the Victoria line suspended.
Major Emergency Response
The scale of the response indicates the seriousness of the incident, with approximately 70 firefighters and multiple fire engines deployed to Electric Avenue. The fire brigade has not yet confirmed the exact number of fire engines at the scene or provided details about the extent of the damage.
Electric Avenue, one of Brixton’s most famous shopping streets, is located just meters from the Underground station entrance on Brixton Road. The street, which was one of the first in Britain to be lit by electricity in the 1880s, remains a busy commercial area with market stalls and shops.
No injuries have been reported at this stage. The cause of the fire remains unknown and will be subject to investigation once the blaze is brought under control.
Transport Disruption
The closure of Brixton station is causing significant disruption to commuters during the morning rush hour. As the southern terminus of the Victoria line, Brixton typically handles millions of passenger journeys annually and serves as a crucial transport hub for South London.
With Stockwell operating as exit-only, passengers traveling southbound on the Victoria line are unable to complete their journeys to Brixton. Transport for London has not provided an estimated time for the station’s reopening.
The Victoria line normally operates services every 3-5 minut
