An Iranian national has been remanded in custody after appearing before magistrates charged with two counts of rape following an alleged attack on Brighton beach.

Abdulla Ahmadi, 25, who lives in Crewe, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he communicated through a translator during proceedings. He was ordered to remain in custody until his next court appearance at Lewes Crown Court on November 13.

Ahmadi is one of three men charged in connection with an alleged attack on a 33-year-old woman on the Lower Esplanade in Brighton during the early hours of October 4.

Three Men Face Charges

Sussex Police arrested and charged three men following what they described as a “fast-paced investigation” into the alleged incident. Each defendant faces two counts of rape.

Alongside Ahmadi, the other men charged are Karin Al-Danasurt, 20, and Ibrahim Alshafe, 25, both Egyptian nationals from Horsham. All three defendants have been remanded in custody pending further court proceedings.

Police received reports of the alleged attack at approximately 5am on Saturday, October 4, prompting an immediate investigation. The Lower Esplanade, a seafront area below the main promenade in Brighton, became the focus of police enquiries.

Swift Police Response

Detective Superintendent Andy Harbour praised the speed of the investigation, stating that all three suspects had been “identified through thorough investigative work” by Sussex Police officers.

“This has been a fast-paced investigation with all three suspects having been identified through thorough investigative work,” Det Supt Harbour said. “I commend the bravery of the victim who we continue to support with specialist officers.”

The senior officer acknowledged the impact such incidents have on the community, adding: “I understand how distressing this incident will be for the community and our dedicated partnership operations to protect women and girls will continue in earnest.”

Victim Support Ongoing

Sussex Police confirmed that the 33-year-old woman at the centre of the case continues to receive support from specially trained officers. The force emphasised its commitment to supporting victims throughout the investigation and court proceedings.

The case has highlighted ongoing concerns about women’s safety in public spaces, particularly during night-time hours. Brighton, a popular seaside resort on England’s south coast, attracts millions of visitors annually and has an active nightlife scene.

Legal Proceedings

The use of a translator for Ahmadi during his court appearance underscores the international nature of the case, with defendants holding Iranian and Egyptian nationalities. Court interpreters ensure that defendants fully understand the charges against them and can properly participate in legal proceedings.

Under English law, defendants charged with serious offences such as rape typically appear first before magistrates’ courts for initial proceedings before cases are transferred to crown courts, which have greater sentencing powers and handle more serious criminal matters.

The remand in custody means all three defendants will remain in prison whilst awaiting their crown court appearances. Magistrates can remand defendants when they consider there are substantial grounds for believing the defendant would fail to surrender to custody, commit further offences, or interfere with witnesses or otherwise obstruct justice.

Community Impact

The alleged incident has prompted renewed discussions about safety measures along Brighton’s extensive beachfront, which stretches for several miles and includes both busy commercial areas near the pier and more isolated sections.

Local authorities and police have long-standing partnership operations aimed at protecting women and girls in the area, with increased patrols during peak times and collaborative work with venues and transport providers to ensure public safety.

Brighton and Hove City Council works closely with Sussex Police on various safety initiatives, including improved lighting, CCTV coverage, and safe spaces programmes designed to protect vulnerable individuals.

Crown Court Proceedings

When Ahmadi appears at Lewes Crown Court on November 13, he will face the next stage of criminal proceedings. Crown courts handle the most serious criminal cases in England and Wales, with trials heard before a judge and jury.

If the case proceeds to trial, all three defendants will be presumed innocent until proven guilty, a fundamental principle of the British justice system. The prosecution will need to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Rape cases in crown courts can result in significant sentences if defendants are convicted, with maximum penalties of life imprisonment under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

Wider Context

The case occurs against a backdrop of ongoing national conversations about violence against women and girls, with police forces across the country implementing new strategies to address these crimes.

Sussex Police, like other forces, has dedicated units focusing on sexual offences and safeguarding, with specially trained officers who support victims through the investigation and court process.

The force encourages anyone who has experienced sexual assault or rape to report it, emphasising that reports will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly, with support available throughout the process.

As legal proceedings continue, the case remains subject to strict reporting restrictions to ensure fair trial rights for all defendants and to protect the identity of the alleged victim, who has automatic lifetime anonymity under the law.
