Justin Timberlake has revealed he has been battling Lyme disease throughout his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, disclosing the diagnosis on Thursday just one day after concluding the troubled concert series that faced mounting criticism over his “tired” and “lacklustre” stage performances. The 44-year-old former NSYNC star shared the health news in an emotional Instagram post, stating the tick-borne illness has caused “massive amounts of nerve pain” and “crazy fatigue” whilst performing to audiences worldwide.

The announcement comes after months of viral social media videos showing disappointed fans demanding refunds, with concert-goers paying up to £460 ($600) for tickets only to witness what many described as “lifeless karaoke” performances. One viral TikTok from Romania, viewed over 20 million times, showed a fan lamenting she paid “a lot of money” to feel “disrespected” by Timberlake’s low-energy show.

“When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure,” Timberlake wrote on Instagram. “But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness.”

Diagnosis Explains Months of Fan Complaints

The Lyme disease revelation provides context for what fans across Europe and North America have been describing as disappointing performances throughout the tour, which began in April 2024 and concluded on 30 July 2025 in Istanbul. Social media has been flooded with criticism, with comments including “Why he treating performing like a side job?!” and “Justin Timberlake really thought he could do the bare minimum & get away with it?

According to sources cited by entertainment outlets, ticket sales for the tour were “not as buoyant as he’d hoped,” leading to the singer becoming “short-tempered both on and off stage.” The Daily Mail reported Timberlake was “in a rut” creatively, wanting to perform new material whilst audiences demanded his greatest hits.

Timberlake acknowledged the physical toll in his post, explaining he faced a critical decision: “Stop touring? Or, keep going and figure it out. I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I’m so glad I kept going.”

Joins Growing List of Musicians with Lyme Disease

The Grammy winner joins a notable list of musicians who have publicly battled Lyme disease, including fellow Canadians Shania Twain and Avril Lavigne, as well as Justin Bieber. Twain’s diagnosis in 2003 nearly ended her career when the disease attacked her vocal cords, causing dysphonia. Lavigne was bedridden for two years after contracting the illness in 2014.

“If you’ve experienced this disease or know someone who has — then you’re aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically,” Timberlake wrote, describing symptoms that align with other celebrities’ experiences of the condition.

Lyme disease, caused by bacteria transmitted through infected tick bites, affects an estimated 420,000 Americans annually according to recent statistics. The illness can cause fever, rash, joint pain, neurological problems, and severe fatigue—symptoms that can persist for months or years even after treatment.

Tour Faced Multiple Setbacks Beyond Health Issues

The Forget Tomorrow World Tour, Timberlake’s first in five years, faced challenges beyond the singer’s health struggles. The tour launch was overshadowed by his arrest for driving whilst intoxicated in Sag Harbor, New York, in June 2024. He later pleaded guilty to a non-criminal driving whilst impaired traffic violation in September, receiving a fine and community service.

Several concerts were postponed during the tour run, including an October 2024 show due to injury and another due to bronchitis and laryngitis. Despite positive reviews from some critics praising Timberlake as “an effortless showman,” fan reaction on social media painted a starkly different picture.

One widely-shared comment read: “Imagine paying $600 to watch the crowd at a Justin Timberlake concert sing his songs,” whilst another stated: “It’s mediocre performance. It’s time to stop!”

Raising Awareness and Seeking Connection

In his Instagram post, Timberlake expressed hope that sharing his diagnosis would help others experiencing the disease and foster greater understanding. “Sharing all of this with the hope that we can all find a way to be more connected,” he wrote. “I’d like to do my part to help others experiencing this disease, too.”

The singer’s revelation highlights the often-invisible nature of chronic illnesses like Lyme disease. Avril Lavigne, who founded the Avril Lavigne Foundation to raise awareness about tick-borne illnesses, previously described feeling like she was “underwater and drowning” during her worst symptoms.

Medical experts note that Lyme disease can be particularly challenging for performers, as the condition’s impact on energy levels, cognitive function, and physical stamina directly affects their ability to maintain the high-energy performances audiences expect.

Financial Impact and Industry Response

Billboard’s midyear Boxscore report showed the Forget Tomorrow World Tour grossed £56 million ($73.2 million) across 41 shows by late May 2024, ranking Timberlake as the 10th top touring artist. However, the viral backlash and complaints about performance quality may have lasting impacts on his touring reputation.

Entertainment industry analyst commentary suggests modern concert-goers expect more than just star power, demanding authentic engagement and energy—expectations Timberlake struggled to meet whilst battling his undisclosed illness. The tour’s conclusion in Istanbul was described by critics as coming “not a moment too soon.”

Timberlake concluded his announcement by thanking his team, family, and fans who supported him through what he called “the most fun, emotional, gratifying, physically demanding, and, at times, grueling experience.”

The singer has not announced whether he plans to continue treatment publicly or how the diagnosis might affect future touring plans. However, his disclosure adds to growing awareness of Lyme disease’s impact on the entertainment industry and the importance of early detection and treatment.
