Toronto Pearson International Airport is Canada’s busiest travel hub, usually associated with takeoffs and landings—not gunfire. But on the morning of April 24, 2025, tragedy struck as a man was fatally shot by Peel Regional Police outside the Terminal 1 departures area. The shocking incident, which unfolded just before 7 a.m., sent ripples across the country and raised immediate questions about airport safety, mental health, and law enforcement protocols.

In this in-depth article, we explore what happened, how authorities responded, and what this means for the future of public safety at one of North America’s busiest airports.

What Happened at Pearson Airport?

The scene unfolded quickly but left a lasting impression. At around 6:50 a.m. local time, officers responded to a call reporting a “man in distress” in an SUV parked at the departures curb of Terminal 1. When officers approached the vehicle, the man reportedly produced a firearm. Moments later, three officers opened fire.

Authorities confirmed the man died at the scene. His body, covered with a yellow tarp, was seen lying on the pavement near the SUV, which had its trunk open. Police quickly cordoned off the area, and operations at the terminal were temporarily disrupted.

Details from Peel Regional Police and the SIU

Peel Regional Police handed the case over to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which investigates all incidents involving police where there has been serious injury or death. According to their official statement, six investigators and three forensic experts have been assigned to determine what exactly happened.

The SIU confirmed:

The unit will now review body camera footage, interview officers and witnesses, and examine forensic evidence at the scene.

What Prompted the Shooting?

As of now, the identity of the man has not been released, and his motivations remain unclear. However, the SIU stated he was in “distress” at the time of the incident. Whether the firearm was real or a replica has not yet been disclosed, and questions remain about the mental health status of the individual involved.

Authorities emphasized that officers acted in response to a direct threat. Standard police protocol in Canada requires that lethal force be used only when there is an imminent threat to life.

This case will likely spark further debate on how police respond to mental health crises and the balance between public safety and de-escalation.

Public Safety and Airport Operations During the Incident

Despite the gravity of the situation, airport operations continued with minimal disruption. Pearson Airport temporarily diverted passengers from the Terminal 1 departures level to arrivals, while police secured the scene and cleared the area.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) issued a statement assuring the public that there was no ongoing threat and that all necessary security protocols were followed.

Air Canada and other major airlines operating from Terminal 1 confirmed that flights continued on schedule, though some travelers reported minor delays due to restricted access during the investigation.
