Duchess of Sussex posts empowering message alongside image of daughter at California home, hours after sharing behind-the-scenes moment with Prince Harry
Meghan Markle has shared a rare new photograph of Princess Lilibet on Instagram to commemorate International Day of the Girl, accompanied by an empowering message to young women worldwide.
The 43-year-old Duchess of Sussex posted the touching image on Friday, capturing a tender moment between herself and her four-year-old daughter at their California residence, whilst carefully keeping Lilibet’s face hidden to protect her privacy.
The post also included an adorable video of the young princess running through the garden at the couple’s Montecito home.
“This World Is Yours”
Accompanying the images was a powerful statement from Meghan directed at girls everywhere: “To all the girls, this world is yours. Do everything you can to protect your rights, use your voice, support each other.”
She continued: “We will do the same for you. It’s your right and our responsibility. Go get ’em, girl! Happy International Day of the Girl.”
The United Nations designated 11 October as International Day of the Girl Child to address global gender disparities and advocate for young women’s access to education, healthcare and protection from discrimination.
Behind-the-Scenes Glimpse
The heartfelt post came just hours after Meghan took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes video from her and Prince Harry’s appearance at the World Mental Health Day Gala in New York City on Thursday evening.
The footage captured a light-hearted moment between the couple backstage, with Meghan seen laughing whilst Harry reviewed documents beside a lamp.
The Duchess of Sussex captioned the clip: “Happy World Mental Health Day,” adding a personal tribute: “…to the man who always keeps me laughing.
Humanitarian Honours Amidst Speculation
The social media posts followed the couple’s attendance at Thursday’s Project Healthy Minds event, where they were honoured as Humanitarians of the Year for their charitable work.
However, observers noted some awkward interactions during their red carpet appearance. The Duke of Sussex appeared to rush his wife forward whilst they posed for photographers, and Meghan found herself standing alone when Harry moved away to engage in conversation with another attendee.
These moments prompted speculation about tension between the pair, though Meghan’s latest Instagram posts suggest they remain on good terms.
Mental Health Advocacy
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle marked World Mental Health Day by participating in Project Healthy Minds’ annual festival in New York City.
The couple’s Archewell Foundation organised three panel discussions at the event, which gathered industry leaders to examine the future of mental health initiatives.
Protecting Children’s Privacy
Meghan and Prince Harry have maintained a long-standing policy of not showing their children’s faces in photographs, though they appear to have been gradually relaxing this stance since Meghan returned to Instagram in 2025.
The couple, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020, are parents to Prince Archie, born in May 2019, and Princess Lilibet, born in June 2021.
Lilibet was named in honour of both Prince Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, whose childhood nickname was Lilibet, and his mother, Princess Diana.
Throughout 2025, Meghan has occasionally shared glimpses of her children on social media, including photos marking their birthdays, International Women’s Day and US Mother’s Day, whilst always ensuring their faces remain partially or fully obscured.
The Duchess recently hinted at her hopes for Lilibet’s future during an episode of her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast, telling Tina Knowles: “I wonder if one day I’ll be in business with Lili and we’ll be building something.”
