A mother has appeared in court charged with murdering her three-year-old daughter after the youngster was found dead at their Leeds home following a concern for welfare report.

Hope McGrath was discovered by police at the property on Austhorpe Court in the Colton area of Leeds on 30 July. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene after officers responded to the call at 11.06am.

Her mother, Pippa McGrath, 47, appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Monday charged with murder. During the brief hearing, she spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth and address.

Court Hears Toxicology Report Will Be Key

Recorder of Leeds Guy Kearl KC told the court that crucial evidence in the case had yet to be gathered. “A post mortem on Hope has not taken place. It is to take place tomorrow,” he said. “The heart of the issue will be a toxicology report.”

The court heard that psychiatric reports would be prepared to establish McGrath’s fitness to plead in the proceedings. A provisional trial date was set for 24 February, with a further hearing scheduled for 3 September.

McGrath is accused of murdering her daughter between 26 July and 30 July. She was remanded in custody following the hearing.

The court was told that McGrath and Hope had moved to Austhorpe Court just weeks before the tragedy occurred. Neighbours suggested that the youngster had a disability and required the use of a wheelchair, but was often heard playing in her back garden.

Family Release Photograph in Tribute

West Yorkshire Police have released a photograph of Hope provided by her family, who have asked for privacy during this difficult time. The image shows a smiling young girl with blonde hair.

Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hope’s death. A photograph of the three-year-old has been released by her family. I would ask that people respect their privacy at this extremely difficult time.”

The detective confirmed that police are treating the incident as isolated and are not seeking anyone else in connection with Hope’s death.

Community in Shock Over Tragedy

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the quiet residential area of Colton. Residents who spoke to local media expressed their disbelief at the events that had unfolded in their community.

Drazen Priganica, who has lived in the area for seven years and works for a mental health charity, told reporters: “It’s a terrible thing. You can’t tell what’s happened, but it will all come out. Then I can think more about why it happened. My heart goes out to the little girl and the family. Jesus, a little girl. Three years old. It’s no age.”

Steve, a resident of 20 years, added: “Obviously, it’s shocking.

Mother Taken to Hospital Before Arrest

Following the discovery of Hope’s body, McGrath was taken to hospital for urgent medical treatment before being arrested on suspicion of murder. She remained in hospital in a stable condition before being charged.

The semi-detached property on Austhorpe Court, a quiet cul-de-sac in the Colton area of Leeds, became the focus of a major police investigation. The area lies approximately five miles east of Leeds city centre, close to the A6120 dual carriageway.

West Yorkshire Police deployed significant resources to the scene, with officers from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team leading the investigation. The force confirmed that emergency services had responded swiftly to the initial concern for welfare report but were unable to save Hope.

Previous Court Appearance

McGrath made her first court appearance at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning, where she appeared in the dock wearing a light grey tracksuit with shoulder-length blonde hair. She spoke only to confirm her identity during the brief hearing.

District Judge informed her that she would next appear at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday for her first crown court appearance. The case was immediately transferred due to the serious nature of the charges.

Police Appeal for Information

Detective Chief Inspector Atkinson acknowledged the impact of the tragedy on the local community, stating: “I understand that such a tragic incident as this will cause shockwaves in the local community and that there will be speculation about what has happened.”

She urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, whilst asking the public to avoid speculation and allow officers to conduct their enquiries.

West Yorkshire Police have emphasised that they are treating this as an isolated incident, seeking to reassure the local community that there is no wider threat to public safety.

Investigation Continues

The investigation into Hope’s death remains ongoing, with forensic examinations continuing at the property. Officers have been conducting house-to-house enquiries in the area as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The post-mortem examination scheduled for Tuesday is expected to provide crucial evidence about the cause of Hope’s death. The toxicology report mentioned by the Recorder of Leeds will form a key part of the prosecution case.

As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on establishing exactly what happened in the days leading up to Hope’s death. The court has heard that psychiatric assessments will be conducted to determine McGrath’s mental state and fitness to stand trial.

The case has highlighted once again the tragic circumstances that can unfold behind closed doors, leaving a community searching for answers and a family devastated by loss.
