Top German spy chief reveals terrifying intelligence showing Russia planning to test West’s resolve with ‘little green men’ – as NATO boss warns: ‘Learn Russian or boost defence spending NOW’

Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is merely the opening salvo in a broader campaign to challenge NATO and reshape Europe’s security order, Germany’s top intelligence chief has warned in explosive revelations that should send shivers down the spine of every European.

Bruno Kahl, head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND), dropped a bombshell yesterday, revealing his agency has “clear intelligence indications that Russian officials believed the collective defence obligations enshrined in the NATO treaty no longer had practical force.”

In a chilling warning that exposes the true scale of Putin’s ambitions, Kahl told Table Media: “We are quite certain, and we have intelligence showing it, that Ukraine is only a step on the journey westward.

‘Little Green Men’ Coming for Estonia

The German spy chief painted a terrifying picture of how Russia plans to test NATO’s resolve without triggering full-scale war. It’s enough to send little green men to Estonia to protect supposedly oppressed Russian minorities,” Kahl warned, referencing the shadowy Russian special forces who seized Crimea in 2014.

This wouldn’t require “armies of tanks” rolling westward, he explained. Instead, Moscow is planning provocations designed to test whether the United States would really “send soldiers across the Atlantic to die for Tallinn, to die for Riga, to die for Vilnius.

The intelligence revelations come as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte delivered his own stark warning to Britain and other alliance members during a major speech at London’s Chatham House on Monday.

‘Learn to Speak Russian’ – NATO Chief’s Brutal Warning

In scenes reminiscent of Cold War tensions, Rutte didn’t mince words about the consequences of failing to act. “Learn to speak Russian” if defence spending doesn’t increase immediately, he warned bluntly.

The NATO chief called for nothing less than a “quantum leap” in defence capabilities, demanding a staggering “400% increase in air and missile defence” spending across the alliance.

We are all on the eastern flank now,” Rutte declared, warning that “The distance between European capitals is only a few minutes” for Russian missiles.

His proposed targets are eye-watering: 3.5% of GDP on military spending and another 1.5% on “defence-related expenditure” – bringing total defence spending to an unprecedented 5% of national wealth.

2030: The Doomsday Date

Multiple intelligence assessments now converge on a terrifying timeline. Kahl warned that “By the end of this decade at the latest, Russian troops will be able to attack NATO.”

The German intelligence chief revealed that “The Kremlin views the Federal Republic of Germany as an enemy,” noting Germany’s position as Ukraine’s second-largest military backer.

We are in direct conflict with Russia,” he stated bluntly, warning that “Further escalation of the situation is anything but unlikely.

Putin’s Master Plan Exposed

The intelligence reveals Putin’s ultimate objectives go far beyond Ukraine. According to Kahl, Russia wants to:

  • kick America out of Europe”
  • Roll back NATO boundaries to the 1990s
  • Create a new Russian sphere of influence
  • Establish a “new world order” with Moscow at its heart

Russia’s determination to use covert and hybrid measures against the West has reached a “level previously unseen,” Kahl warned, with Moscow using these tactics “without any scruples.

Hybrid Warfare Already Underway

The threat isn’t just theoretical – it’s already happening. Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics against the West could eventually lead to NATO invoking the alliance’s mutual defence clause,” Kahl warned at a Berlin think tank event.

Recent incidents include:

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the cable cutting “appeared to be an act of sabotage and a ‘hybrid action’.”

UK Under Pressure to Act

The warnings put immediate pressure on Sir Keir Starmer’s government, which has committed to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence from April 2027, rising to 3% over the next parliament.

But Rutte made clear this isn’t enough. If you do not do this, if you would not go to the 5%, including the 3.5% core defence spending, you could still have the National Health Service… but you had better learn to speak Russian,” he warned starkly.

The NATO chief praised elements of Britain’s strategic defence review but stressed the urgency of the threat, saying Russia could be ready to use force against NATO within five years.

Putin’s Nuclear Blackmail

The Russian president has repeatedly used nuclear threats to deter Western support for Ukraine, but intelligence officials say this is part of a calculated strategy to test Western resolve.

Three Russian sources told Reuters that Putin’s conditions for ending the war include demands that Western leaders pledge in writing to stop enlarging NATO eastwards – effectively giving Moscow a veto over the alliance’s future.

But as one former CIA chief noted, the West has allowed itself to be “bamboozled by Vladimir Putin and his nuclear-sabre rattling.

The Real Reason for War

While Putin claims NATO expansion forced his hand, experts say this is a smokescreen. Ukraine’s prospects of joining the alliance were virtually nonexistent” when Russia invaded in 2022.

Even German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had “assured Putin that Ukrainian NATO membership was out of the question for at least the next 30 years” on the eve of the invasion.

The real fear driving Putin? Democracy on his doorstep. As one analyst puts it: “What terrifies him is the prospect of a flourishing Ukrainian democracy.”

A New Iron Curtain?

The intelligence revelations paint a picture of a Europe sliding toward a new Cold War – or worse. Russia is considering testing NATO’s collective security guarantees and this risk will increase if the fighting in Ukraine stops in the near future, Kahl warned.

An early end to the war in Ukraine would enable the Russians to direct their energy where they actually want it, namely against Europe,” the German intelligence chief said.

As Europe grapples with these terrifying revelations, one thing is crystal clear: the post-Cold War peace dividend is over. The question now is whether Western leaders will heed these warnings in time – or whether future generations will indeed need to “learn to speak Russian.
