Not far from London lies a sandy beach with beautiful waters – but surprisingly, it’s nowhere near the coast. Frensham Great Pond in Surrey offers city dwellers a Green Flag award-winning escape with excellent water quality, making it a perfect swim spot without venturing to the seaside.

Located between Farnham and Hindhead, this hidden gem is just an hour and a half drive from the capital, providing Londoners with their own slice of beach paradise complete with golden sand and refreshing waters.

The 13th-century pond, originally created to supply fish to the Bishop of Winchester and his court whilst visiting Farnham Castle, has transformed into one of the South East’s most popular wild swimming destinations.

Sandy Beach Paradise

Frensham Great Pond is renowned for its man-made sandy beach stretching along the northern edge of the lake, offering ample opportunity to sunbathe and swim during warm weather. The designated swimming area features a buoyed-off section that shelves to approximately 1.5 metres deep and 50 metres wide, making it ideal for families.

According to government water quality monitoring, Frensham Great Pond has maintained an “excellent” rating since 2021, with the most recent water sample taken on 24 June 2025 confirming its high standards.

“Cracking swim at the famous Frensham Ponds in Surrey. Had the whole place to ourselves, bliss!” one swimmer wrote on Facebook earlier this month, highlighting the pond’s appeal during quieter periods.

Another visitor commented: “Lovely place for a stroll. Ideal for families for a swim in the pond. Enjoy the sandy beach with a picnic.”

A third described it as a “wild fresh water swimming oasis,” emphasising its natural beauty and appeal to outdoor enthusiasts.

Part of Larger Conservation Area

The pond forms part of the expansive Frensham Common, covering approximately 1,000 acres including Frensham Little Pond. This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA) consists of dry and wet heath, woodland, scrub, and ponds.

The area holds great importance for heathland insects, reptiles, and birds, including nightjars, stonechats, and whinchats. The precious heathland displays a colourful mosaic of purple heathers, fragrant bright yellow gorse, and rich green bracken.

Waverley Borough Council, which manages the site, has warned that during summer months, occasional blue-green algae blooms may occur. Warning signs are posted when this happens, advising swimmers to avoid the water for safety reasons. Currently, the pond is safe for swimming, though visitors should always check water quality before taking a dip.

Swimming is not permitted in Frensham Little Pond due to lower water quality standards and its status as a protected wildlife sanctuary.

Hollywood Connection

While many visitors may not realise it, Frensham Pond has enjoyed considerable fame on both big and small screens. The location appeared in the 1999 blockbuster film “The Mummy,” where it doubled as a Nile scene.

“Snow White and the Huntsman,” featuring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth, filmed at Frensham Little Pond, with the woods used for forest scenes and huts built on the shores to create a fishing village.

The ponds have also featured in the 1960s classic “Carry On Jack” and more recently served as filming locations for the fantasy series “The Witcher,” where elaborate sets including wagons and campsites were constructed near the water’s edge.

Netflix series “Cursed,” starring Katherine Langford, used Frensham Little Pond as the setting for Nimue’s home village, adding to the location’s impressive screen credentials.

Practical Information

Visitors can reach Frensham Great Pond by entering postcode GU10 3DX into their sat nav, which leads to the car park on Bacon Lane, just steps from the beach. The nearest train station is Farnham, approximately four miles north, with the number 19 bus service to Haslemere stopping opposite the pond.

Car parking operates via the RingGo app only, with National Trust members able to obtain free parking tickets by scanning their membership cards at the parking machine near the office and café complex.

The site features essential amenities including toilets and a café serving hot food, ice creams, and drinks. One visitor particularly praised the café’s chips, describing them as having “the perfect amount of crunch on the outside and light fluffy potato inside.”

Important Rules and Restrictions

Waverley Borough Council has established clear guidelines to protect both visitors and the environment:

  • Dogs are not permitted on the beach or in the water at any time
  • Barbecues and fires are strictly prohibited
  • Swimming is restricted to the marked beach area in front of the Ranger’s Office
  • The rest of the pond is reserved for sailing and angling activities

Rangers have warned that swimmers venturing beyond the white marker buoys risk encounters with fishing hooks, lines, sailing craft, and power boats. The location is unsuitable for triathlon training or long-distance swimming.

Managing Popularity

During hot summer weekends and school holidays, Frensham Great Pond can become extremely busy, with the car park often filling by mid-morning. Police have occasionally had to manage traffic during peak times, and early arrival is strongly recommended.

“We would ask those visiting to please help us look after the site by respecting the environment, especially with regards to littering which has such a negative impact on the natural, rare habitat and wildlife that we work so hard to conserve,” a Waverley Borough Council spokesperson said.

The council noted there is a “huge influx of visitors” during summer months but only limited parking spaces, which fill quickly.

For those seeking a more peaceful experience, visiting during weekdays or outside peak season offers the chance to enjoy this Surrey gem without the crowds, making it an ideal escape for Londoners looking for a beach experience without the long journey to the coast.
