A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder and rape following the death of a 13-year-old girl who was found unresponsive at a house in Huddersfield.

The schoolgirl was discovered at a property in Sheepridge Road on Monday night and was rushed to hospital, where she died in the early hours of Tuesday morning. West Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into the death, which they are treating as “unexplained” whilst enquiries continue.

Officers were called to the address at 11.36pm on Monday, 11 August, after the ambulance service reported that a teenage girl was unresponsive. Despite medical efforts, the 13-year-old died in hospital shortly after midnight.

Arrest and Investigation

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed: “The 16-year-old boy from Huddersfield was arrested on suspicion of murder and rape in connection with the death of the girl in hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The force added: “The girl’s death is currently being treated by West Yorkshire Police as unexplained, and police enquiries are underway to determine the circumstances.

Detectives are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death, with the investigation still in its early stages.

Additional Charge

In a significant development, police revealed that the arrested teenager is also facing allegations relating to a separate incident. The 16-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of another offence of rape involving a 16-year-old girl from an “unrelated incident elsewhere in Kirklees.

This additional charge suggests the investigation may extend beyond the tragic death of the 13-year-old, though police have not provided further details about the second alleged offence.

Community Impact

The death of the young teenager has sent shockwaves through the Huddersfield community, with the circumstances adding to local concerns about youth safety. Sheepridge Road, a residential area in Huddersfield, became the focus of police activity as investigators worked to piece together what happened.

West Yorkshire Police have not released the identity of either the victim or the arrested teenager, in line with legal restrictions protecting minors involved in criminal proceedings. Under UK law, individuals under 18 cannot be named in connection with criminal cases unless specific court orders permit it.

Investigation Continues

The force has indicated that their investigation remains active, with detectives working to establish a clear timeline of events leading up to the girl’s death. Post-mortem examinations and forensic analysis are likely to form crucial parts of the investigation as officers seek to determine the exact cause of death.

Given the serious nature of the charges – murder and rape – the case is expected to be handled by specialist detectives from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team. The force has extensive experience in handling sensitive cases involving young people.

Legal Proceedings

The arrested teenager remains in custody whilst police continue their enquiries. Given his age, he will be entitled to appropriate adult support during any interviews and legal proceedings. If charged, any subsequent court appearances would likely be held in youth court initially, with reporting restrictions in place to protect his identity.

The Crown Prosecution Service will ultimately decide whether there is sufficient evidence to bring formal charges, based on the police investigation’s findings. This process can take several weeks or months in complex cases, particularly those involving forensic evidence.

Support Services

Local authorities and support services are likely to be providing assistance to those affected by this tragedy, including the families involved and the wider school community. Schools in the area may offer counselling services to students affected by the loss of their peer.

West Yorkshire Police have not issued any appeals for witnesses at this stage, suggesting they may already have sufficient information about the circumstances. However, anyone with relevant information is always encouraged to contact police through official channels.

The investigation continues, with updates expected as the case progresses through the criminal justice system.
