Shocking footage has emerged showing a screaming toddler left on the floor during a violent brawl at a packed London Tube station during rush hour.

The fight erupted between a group of men at the entrance to Highbury and Islington Station at approximately 5.30pm on Thursday, with British Transport Police now investigating mobile phone footage being shared online.

Video of the incident shows a smartly-dressed man kicking the head of another man in a grey tracksuit as horrified commuters attempted to intervene.

Child Caught in Violence

The disturbing footage captured a toddler in a white romper suit sitting on the floor at the bottom of the station steps as the violent confrontation unfolded feet away.

Screaming members of the public desperately attempted to break up the fight and help a mother with a baby in a buggy get out of harm’s way.

Horrified bystanders then rushed to pick up the crying child from the floor as chaos erupted around them, with someone throwing a rucksack into the packed crowd of commuters.

Men Trade Blows on Station Steps

The video shows two smartly-dressed men engaged in a violent altercation with a third man wearing casual clothes at the station entrance.

The group appeared to hurl one man down the stairs before throwing punches and kicks at him as rush-hour commuters looked on in shock.

Witnesses described seeing the men “stomping” on one individual during the confrontation, with women heard screaming as the violence escalated.

Commuters Attempt Intervention

Several passers-by attempted to separate the fighting men, including a woman wearing a yellow dress who tried to intervene in the melee.

At one point, the third man was lifted off his feet during the struggle as commuters scrambled to protect vulnerable bystanders.

The fight continued despite attempts by members of the public to break it up, with the confrontation spilling across the busy station entrance.

Eyewitness Accounts Emerge

Unverified eyewitness accounts circulating on social media claimed one man punched another whilst he was holding a baby, causing the infant to fall to the ground.

The same accounts suggested the two smartly-dressed men then began attacking and stamping on the third man before he eventually fled the scene.

However, British Transport Police have not confirmed these details as their investigation continues.

Police Launch Investigation

A British Transport Police spokesperson confirmed: “Officers received a report of a fight at Highbury and Islington Underground station at around 5.30pm yesterday (17 July).”

“Officers are aware of footage circulating on social media, and the incident is currently being investigated.”

The force has urged anyone with information to text 61016 with reference 558 of 17 July.

Station’s History of Violence

The incident adds to concerns about safety at the busy North London transport hub, which serves both Underground and Overground lines.

Highbury and Islington has previously seen violent incidents, including a serious assault in 2023 where a man’s ear was bitten during a fight.

The station, one of London’s busiest interchanges, sees thousands of commuters pass through daily.

Public Reaction

The footage has been viewed millions of times on social media, with many expressing shock at the violence occurring in such a public space.

Social media users particularly highlighted concerns about the child’s safety during the incident, with many praising those who intervened to help.

The video was initially shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user David Atherton, quickly going viral as Londoners expressed their dismay.

Appeal for Witnesses

British Transport Police are continuing their investigation and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was at the station at the time or who may have additional footage of the incident.

The force has emphasised the importance of public assistance in establishing the full circumstances of what occurred.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 558 of 17 July.
